Hi There

Karl-Emil

I am Karl-Emil, an interaction designer and researcher with a PhD in computer Science currently working as a PostDoc in Center for Computational Thinking and Deisign at Aarhus University. I design educational tools to teach about big data and artificial intelligence in primary and secondary school with a Scandinavian focus on how students can sustain their agency in an increasingly digitized and computationalized world.

My Research

In my research, I design and deploy prototypes with two main purposes: They serve as explorations of design spaces, to investigate questions such as how machine learning can be conceptualised for general education, how educational tools can become instruments for critical reflection, and how these tools can complement existing practices in classrooms. These investigations include multiple iterations on prototypes, experiments in lab studies, and classroom interventions. Furthermore, the prototypes serve as instruments to implement teaching of artificial intelligence in classrooms (when the researchers are not there). This happens through co-design proceses with teachers, in demonstrations for decision-makers and teachers, and when my prototypes are developed into products that can be used by teachers and students. I collaborate with municipalities, educational institutions, and private organizations about how educational tools and activities about/with artificial intelligence can scale out into multiple classrooms. This involves commited partnership, funding applications, co-design processes, and building software development infrastructures.
